Film: Tender is the Night

TENDER IS THE NIGHT, from the novel by F Scott Fitzgerald, is the story of a young American psychiatrist who meets and marries a patient in treatment at a clinic in Zurich. The film is loosely based on the author’s wife Zelda who was admitted in a clinic in Geneva under a colleague of Forel, connected to Jung and Bleuler at the Burghozli hospital in Zurich. We will view and discuss this film, exploring the complex relationship between a woman and her therapist/husband within the the psychotherapeutic ideas of the time and their relevance today. We will be particularly attentive to questions around transference and concepts of what constitutes illness and cure.
