The Myth Salon is bringing you Squaring the Circle, which derives from the art and philosophy of visionary California colorist, Burton Kopelow who brought forth abstract, mystical mandalas reflecting his immersion in Jung, alchemy, consciousness, Theosophy, eastern mysticism, and personal transformation. Kopelow originated the idea of Chromorphism, a series of large scale paintings which centered on Tibetan Thangka paintings and the core concepts of CG Jung, especially Jung’s psychology of mandalas that he considered expressions of the total Self.
This Myth Salon takes place as accompaniment to an exhibit currently installed at the Philosophical Research Society. Our panel will include PRS exhibit curator David Orr, Sandra del Castillo, PhD., a ritual artist and spokesperson for the exhibit, Gary Gach, poet, editor and author of (among many other things) The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Buddhism, and Nancy Blumstein, Kopelow’s widow and author of the stunning retrospective book, Burton Kopelow: Paths of Discovery. David Orr is a mandala artist himself, currently immersed in producing “moon mandalas” and releasing them on a weekly basis (that we may get a chance to view). He writes, people will experience a deep dive into the “vivid kinetic geometry” of Kopelow’s “asymmetrical yet balanced” mandalas. The focus of this Myth Salon is not only the art of Kopelow but it is first of a series of Myth Salons on mandalas.
