Drawing on theories by Freud, Lacan, Derrida, Badiou, and Bauman we will look into violence in the social context of Latin America.
Violence has a specific frame of determination and historical conditions. If we consider these perspectives, what is the specificity of violence in the 21st century? And to be more precise: what are the conditions that produce a specific frame where violence takes place?
This online seminar will be divided into two parts. The first part will be dedicated to understanding the two perspectives of violence—one in the first half of the 20th century, which is marked by people being violated or killed in concentration camps. The second type of violence began in the second half of the 20th century, and is still present in Mexico and the whole of Latin America today: people are disappearing.The second part of the seminar will be dedicated to the relation between the social context and the individual, as initially described by Freud and Lacan, and further elaborated by Jacques Derrida, Alain Badiou, and Zygmund Bauman.
