Detecting meaning in music is a difficult philosophical task that has occupied the minds of philosophers and thinkers throughout the centuries. From prominent German philosophers like Nietzsche and Schopenhauer, to the American philosopher Susanne Langer who researched the similarity between music and language, many have tried to analyze this most abstract form of art to discover its secrets. Join pianist and music scholar Chaden Yafi as we wander through the thought of French philosopher Vladimir Jankélévitch (himself a pianist) and his contemporary, Theodor Adorno, both of whom wrote extensively about the issue of meaning in music. Finally, we’ll explore the great American conductor and composer Leonard Bernstein’s simplification of this question into his idea of the four layers of musical meaning.
