This talk considers the shame-inducing impact of homophobia and heteronormativity on the development of a boy who grows up with an awareness of a gay identity. Poul Rohleder will draw on clinical and cultural examples, to demonstrate the experience of internalised homophobia and how this may be defended against. He will suggest that it is the aspects of a gay man’s identity that are associated with social constructions of vulnerability and weakness that are particularly shame-inducing, as they evoke a misogynistic fear of becoming “like a woman”. These issues will be discussed and consideration given to how they may be addressed in therapy.
