Likewise, as I began to move in the world, I found myself as drawn to science fiction and notions of possibility or the future. Part of this was my elated realization that any and all of us can create a wonderful future – who’s to say that the mind that incubates a great, new notion won’t be mine, or yours? – but partly also from the realization that modern life is pretty confusing and a lot of people are suffering because, as Jung wrote in his memoirs, “we have plunged down a cataract of progress which sweeps us on into the future with ever wilder violence the farther it takes us from our roots.” (C. G. Jung, Memories, Dreams, Reflections, Chapter 8)
