Loss is integral to life (S.B. Jenczka). Death is psychologically as important as birth and, like it, is an integral part of life…. As a doctor, I make every effort to strengthen the belief in immortality, especially with older patients when such questions come threateningly close. For, seen in correct psychological perspective, death is not an end but a goal. (C.G. Jung, CW 13 ¶68) Writings and musings from personal to universal will guide and inform our exploration into matters related to loss, emptiness, dying and individuation. Consider the old saying “The whole is greater than the sum of the parts,” which seems relevant to Toffler’s comment: The illiterate of the 21st century will not be those who cannot read and write, but those who cannot learn, unlearn and relearn. (Alvin Toffler)
