The Synchronicity of the Two Red Books: Jung, Tolkien, and the Imaginal Realms

Beginning in the years leading up to the Great War, both C. G. Jung and J. R. R. Tolkien independently began to undergo profound imaginal experiences. They had each stepped across a threshold and entered into another world, the realm of imagination, the world of fantasy. Jung recorded these initially spontaneous visionary experiences, which he […]

To see the world in a grain of sand. William Blake’s visionary Christianity
  • Brief Overview: If you wish to attend a Saturday workshop, we strongly recommend you also join the Friday online session since this is an integral part of the workshop.
  • Number of hours credit: Available on request

William Blake realised that the human longing to participate in infinite life has been unleashed afresh and distorted in our materialistic age, leading to an addictive, even violent striving for more. When human beings lose touch with the divine dynamics in life, the cosmos becomes bounded and small, leaving the eternal soul shut in narrow […]

Hags and Wise Women- An Archetypal Analysis Of Older Women In European Myth And Fairy Tales

There is no clear image of enviable female elderhood in the contemporary cultural mythology of the West; it seems not to be an archetype we recognise any more. Older women are mostly ignored, encouraged to be inconspicuous, or held up as objects of derision and satire. But European myths and fairy tales contain a rich […]

Jungian Keynotes – February 2025: Dreams
  • Brief Overview: Jungian Keynotes is a series of eight lectures at the start of each new semester for both ISAP students and the public. This series is not an introduction to Analytical Psychology per se but offers a short introduction followed by an in-depth exploration of a key aspect of Jungian psychology. The lectures will highlight a different aspect each semester. ISAP’s teaching program is not, and cannot be, structured as a linear progression of levels or a tidy division into topics. Analytical Psychology is intrinsically holistic, so learning is by a process akin to osmosis.

Our dreams provide fascinating insight into our unconscious motivations, fears and hopes, and offer wisdom and guidance for a more meaningful life. After Dariane Pictet’s introductory lecture on basic concepts in Jungian Psychology, such as ego, Self, complexes, archetypes, persona and shadow, the seven following lectures highlight various aspects of dreams and dream interpretation: Ursula […]

Engaging the Individuation Process in Moments of Everyday Living

Life is a wild and mysterious process. And so is the process of deepening our awareness of ourselves and living more authentically. Carl Jung developed a model of the psyche which includes the notions of Self and individuation. The Self is the deep inclusive center of our whole being (both conscious and unconscious), and individuation […]

BLUEBEARD, FITCHER’S BIRD AND OTHER TALES OF LOVE, POWER AND DESTRUCTION
  • Brief Overview: Friday, February 28, 20257:30 pm-9:30 pm Saturday, March 1, 202510:30 am-12:30 pm Saturday, March 1, 20252:00 pm-4:00 pm

Fitcher’s Bird, Bluebeard and variants (Mr. Fox, Robber Bridegroom, and others) are some of the most memorably shocking of all the stories collected by the Brothers Grimm. Taking time to delve into the murky and often painful place of destructive elemental, vibrational, archetypal forces is to embark on a ‘night-sea’ journey. One can only hope […]
