The Synchronicity of the Two Red Books: Jung, Tolkien, and the Imaginal Realms

Beginning in the years leading up to the Great War, both C. G. Jung and J. R. R. Tolkien independently began to undergo profound imaginal experiences. They had each stepped across a threshold and entered into another world, the realm of imagination, the world of fantasy. Jung recorded these initially spontaneous visionary experiences, which he […]

The Great Mother: Personal and collective exploration through doll making Part 3 of The Great Mother Series
  • Brief Overview: PLEASE BRING: • No experience is needed. ALL MATERIALS PROVIDED. You may wish to bring ‘special’ items to incorporate into your doll — this can be special fabric, jewellery, shells, beads, feathers, buttons, ribbon, small stones, crystals, or even secret things to be hidden inside the doll. • A journal for reflections of both your personal experience of the Great Mother and how She emerges in your clinical practice. • A lunch to eat at the venue. You will be able to break for lunch in your own time and as your creative process allows. Tea/CoKee and fruit will be available.

Drawing on the work of Susan Rowland1 we will engage with a Jungian Arts-Based Research (JABR) approach to create a doll symbolising the Great Mother archetype. JABR integrates creativity, art-making, and psychological inquiry into a transformative process that dis-members and re-members old forms of knowing and being, transforming art-making into a bridge between the individual […]

THE RAINMAKER AND THERAPEUTIC RELATIONSHIP

‘the spirit of thedepths took my understanding, and all my knowledge, and placed them at theservice of the inexplicable and the paradoxical’. (Red Book p120) The Rainmaker story (Hannah, B. p. 14) indicates that deep listening and a relinquishing of personal desire are necessary for ‘order’, (as connoted in the Rainmaker story), to be noticed. Madness, Wildness, and Pan’s Return

It’s been roughly 2 millennia since the death of the great god Pan – the only god in the Greek pantheon to die. Pan’s death heralded the demise of a polytheistic consciousness rooted in the anima mundi and marked the ascension of a monotheistic, patriarchal order that considered the earth as separate from the sacred. […]
