Archetypal aspects of Abandonment

My soul, where are you? Do you hear me? I speak, I call you-are you there? I have returned, I am here again. I have shaken the dust of all the lands from my feet, and I have come to you, I am with you. After long years of long wandering, I have come to you again.

(Jung, The Red Book)

Surprisingly there is very little mention of abandonment in Jung’s Collected Works. Many fairy tales have the abandonment archetype in their motif. I n this presentation we will look at the various types of abandonment, both in fairy tales and in personal life. We will look at the fairy tale, The Little Earth Cow, by Martin Montanus, which contains both the abandonment archetype and its opposite pole, staying together: an English translation will be sent to participants on registration.
