Disrupting Whiteness
This is a workshop for group analysts/therapists/counsellors who identify as white to come together to study and reflect upon what it means to be socialized into a white body in a society dominated by structural racism and to develop awareness of how we are implicated in perpetuating a system that maintains our privilege and causes harm. Whilst the day won’t focus specifically on how that impacts upon our therapeutic work, we imagine that this will also be present.
The day will include discussion of a selection of texts and media (notified in advance) which give historical and sociological context to the origin of ‘whiteness’ and raise questions about how this is relevant to our work as therapists and group analysts. Through small and large groups, we will look at how the social designation of ‘white’ impacts our external and internal worlds and explore with each other our emotional responses, noticing what our physical and emotional reactions are telling us about how racism lives within us. The aim of the day is to bring more awareness to our actions, our ways of relating and our thoughts. We aim to foster a non-judgmental, supportive yet challenging space, within which we can develop new perspectives about ourselves and the world we live in.
