“Most people have forgotten nowadays what a house can mean, though some of us have come to realize it as never before. It is a kingdom of its own in the midst of the world, a stronghold amid life’s storms and stresses, a refuge, even a sanctuary.”
—Dietrich Bonhoeffer, written during WWII
In her presentation, Ms. Andrews will talk about Jung’s notion of home as a grounding force, and his dream of a house as the model of the psyche. We will explore the notion that home is increasingly important in times of chaos and uncertainty.
Everyone is asked to bring a journal. In addition to the formal presentation, short writing prompts will be offered to loosen the soil of memory and fuel a discussion on home as source of creativity, inspiration, safety, and security. This will be an opportunity to ground ourselves in the new year, as well as to describe the type of refuge we need while living in uncertain times. The questions will allow us to explore how we can carry the archetype of home within us.
