Relatively few people know experientially what Jung meant by the "transcendent function" that can help us access the potential wholeness of Self. This online discussion between a Jungian analyst, a clinical psychologist, and a life coach will investigate how the presenters recognize the transcendent function when it appears, what it is attempting to transcend, and how people can be helped to make room for it to work its magic.
John Beebe will introduce himself and the theme and aim of the program, and then briefly present the other two speakers. Ann Ulanov will follow with the history of Jung's development of the concept of the transcendent function. She will discuss how Jung applied this concept to the development of analytical psychology. Steve will follow with discussion of one-sidedness as the educational and clinical problem Jung was seeking to overcome. He will name the kinds of typological one-sidednesses he has encountered in students of typology. He will also discuss cultural one-sidedness. John will talk about his application of his concept of "spine" of consciousness that can produce an ethical attitude that can transcend one-sided egoism. The three speakers will conclude with a discussion as to the future broadening of the concept of the transcendent function as an educational goal for people studying self-development.
