The formal arrogance of the modern European mind is an anti-psychological arrogance. The simultaneity of good and evil has been the same since the times of the ancient tragedy or the Christian revolution. The mind, however, today proceeds according to Cartesian models and follows the tangled paths of science: justice and injustice must be considered distinct and there must be causes that identify them. The responsibility for evil falls on the other. To do good, the other must be eliminated. Thus, the ancient tragedy is reborn in a new way: From the modern point of view, unlike the tragedy or St. Paul, more than an inner deepening about an attribution of blame, what is sought is the sacrifice of the person responsible.
Paranoia is the only mental disorder that has a direct and profound impact on the story.
A schizophrenic or an anorexic can make those around them suffer, but they do not spread their pathology to them. Paranoid yes. In addition, as Canetti pointed out, paranoia is a typical evil of power and of tyrants. The paranoid suspicion «reads» the enemy in the other, and imprints a rush according to its absurd reasoning: the rival must be attacked immediately, to prevent «conspiracies».
This talk will recall the presence of paranoia in some great collective events, from the Greek myth and the Bible to the “doctrine of preemptive attack” that inaugurates international relations in the 21st century.
