“In Jung’s words, ‘We are born at a given moment,
in a given place, and we have, like celebrated vintages,
the same qualities of the year and of the season which saw our birth.’
-Richard Tarnas, Cosmos and Psyche
Jung understood the importance of the moment of each individual’s birth. While he speaks to the year and the season which saw our birth, in our modern “High Definition” world we can also see this importance right down to the exact minute of our birth.
In “Psyche By Day, Psyche By Night,” we’ll look at the influence of the moment of birth on how Psyche is expressed and individuated through the varying qualities illuminated by day and night. How does Psyche express itself at Sunrise? How can this show up markedly different than Psyche’s expression at High Noon, or Midnight, for example?
Individuation depends on the “right” relationship between Eros and Psyche, which depends on our own “right” relationship to what we find beautiful and attractive; what animates us and brings us joy. These are perhaps found through recognizing the importance of the actual moment we are born. Through examples of famous historical and popular culture figures, we will explore this idea of the importance of the moment of birth and its influence on Eros and Psyche – love and soul.
