Psychedelic Initiation in Postmodern Culture and the Roles of Jung and Grof: A Workshop With Richard Tarnas
Following last night’s lecture, this workshop will address how the seminal ideas and practices of both C.G. Jung and Stanislav Grof, at once distinct and yet deeply overlapping and coherent with each other, have provided an extraordinary frame of reference for psychedelic experience and therapy. We will also very briefly survey the ways that the results of psychedelic research have either affirmed or differed from the teachings of a number of major depth psychologists, from Freud and William James, Rank, Adler, and Klein to Horney, Reich, Laing, and certain central insights of feminist depth psychology.
Finally, we will address the remarkably intensive and sustained research in astrology that both Jung and Grof pursued. We will also summarize studies indicating the unexpected usefulness of archetypal astrology and the tracking of subjects’ planetary transits to their natal charts for understanding the archetypal character and timing of psychedelic journeys.
