What is the Aurora Consurgens?

The third volume of the original edition of Mysterium Coniunctionis contained Marie-Louise von Franz’s work, Aurora Consurgens: A Document Attributed to Thomas Aquinas on the Problem of Opposites in Alchemy. This was included in the German edition of Jung’s Collected Works, but not in the English edition. The talk presents the text and address the question, “How did C.G. Jung discover the text? Why and when was it decided for publication?” It will also touch upon the collaboration between Jung and Marie-Louise von Franz, book history, editions and translations. Further, we will try to move a bit into the content of the text – the Medieval context (and von Franz’s interpretation), Jung’s study of alchemy and Hermetic Philosophy — and finally address the question of its contemporary relevance for Jung History and our understanding of connections between the unconscious and nature.
