We’re excited to share news of a landmark scholarly initiative: Princeton University Press, in partnership with The Philemon Foundation, is publishing The Critical Edition of the Works of C.G. Jung, a comprehensive 26-volume series that promises to transform our understanding of one of the twentieth century’s most influential thinkers.
Led by general editor Sonu Shamdasani, a preeminent Jung scholar and historian of psychology who was recently named an honorary member of the IAAP at their Congress in Zurich this past August, this ambitious project features entirely new translations by Caitlin Stephens, with proofreading by professional translator Astrid Freuler. Distinguished Jungian historians Gaia Domenici, Martin Liebscher, and Christopher Wagner will serve as volume editors. The series will be published chronologically, beginning with Jung’s student years in Basel, with the first volume anticipated in fall 2026 and subsequent volumes appearing once or twice annually.
What Makes a Critical Edition Essential?
Jung’s Collected Works (1957-1979) prioritised making his writings quickly available to the public, whereas this critical edition is a meticulously prepared scholarly version designed to provide readers with the most reliable and accurate representation of his work.
This edition will include variorum presentations showing how Jung’s texts evolved through multiple revisions—crucial for understanding his intellectual development. The previous edition often presented only “final” versions, obscuring historically important formulations and making it nearly impossible to trace when specific passages were written. This led to what scholars call a “nonvintage” reading of Jung, mixing conflicting ideas from different periods of his career. Each volume will feature extensive scholarly apparatus—approximately 35% of the content—including historical introductions, contextual annotations drawing on Jung’s unpublished correspondence, and previously unknown materials discovered when Jung’s archives were first catalogued in 1993.
With growing interest in Jung among new generations, this critical edition offers fresh translations and unprecedented scholarly context that will establish the foundation for Jung studies for decades to come.
