Exploring Gender and Identity

Meet the 2024 Fordham prize winning authors

The Journal of Analytical Psychology hosts its sixth “Meeting the Author” event featuring Jungian analysts Jay Barlow and Robert Tyminski. This interactive online session spotlights their 2024 Michael Fordham Prize-winning papers, published in the Journal of Analytical Psychology (Volume 69, Issue 5). Barlow’s “The Umbilical” (pages 827–854) and Tyminski’s “Humanizing Different Archetypal Expressions of Gender Expansiveness” (pages 809–826) both delve into gender and sexual identity, offering fresh psychoanalytic perspectives. Tyminski examines the challenges “gender expansiveness” poses to sociocultural norms, while Barlow, incorporating Louise Bourgeois’ art, argues that gender and sex, though significant, are not the root causes of trauma, using projective identification to explore early development. Both papers present challenging case material that enriches the discussion. Restricted to psychotherapeutic practitioners, this free event offers a unique opportunity to engage directly with the authors, ask questions, and discuss their groundbreaking work.
