The Journal of Analytical Psychology is hosting a two-part online workshop to explore the true essence of Jung’s Psychological Types, and address the widespread misunderstandings that have persisted since its publication in 1921. Led by Steve Myers, this series will examine Jung’s original intent, particularly his focus on individuation rather than mere typological categorization, and how his gravamen can be reclaimed in the 21st century.
The workshop will begin with a pre-sessional video that introduces Psychological Types, illustrating the differences between the types through art while also addressing how popular interpretations diverged from Jung’s intent. The video will also explore how, later in his career, Jung used the metaphor of alchemy to explain the book’s core message.
The first live Zoom session will focus on discussing the issues raised in the video and examining into Jung’s existential concerns.
The second session will take a broader perspective, examining real-world expressions of the ‘transcendent function’ and the consequences of its absence through historical case studies. The discussion will then turn to the future, considering the relevance of Jung’s gravamen not only for contemporary typology, but also for broader societal and existential challenges.
