Unconscious Threads in Brazilian Culture

Junguiana vol 43 São Paulo 2025

The newest issue of the Junguiana journal by the Sociedade Brasileira de Psicologia Analítica (SBPA), features a concise yet impactful issue with two original articles. Available in Portuguese, English, and Spanish with downloadable PDFs, this issue explores contemporary Jungian perspectives on gender and cultural dynamics.

The first article, Feminismos junguianos e a mulher trickster pós-moderna by Luna Pereira Gimenez, explores the intersection of Jungian feminism and the postmodern trickster archetype as embodied by women. Gimenez reexamines traditional Jungian concepts like anima and animus, critiquing their cultural biases to propose a fluid, non-essentialist view of femininity. Drawing on postmodern contexts, the article highlights how this archetype disrupts binary gender frameworks, offering a transformative lens for psychological and cultural identity, particularly relevant in Brazil’s evolving gender discourse.

The second article, Branquitude e Contratransferência: Implicações de um Complexo Cultural no Ambiente Psicanalítico by Pitágoras Baskara Justino, addresses whiteness as a cultural complex influencing psychoanalytic countertransference. Justino explores how unconscious racial biases among analysts, rooted in Brazil’s colonial history, shape therapeutic dynamics, often reinforcing power imbalances. The study emphasizes the need for analysts to confront this complex to enhance clinical sensitivity, proposing reflective practices to mitigate its impact.
