“The Mystery of the Mysteries –
a Talk in Honour of Glenda Cloughley, on our 41st Anniversary”
With Dr Craig San Roque

at MacKillop House, 50 Archibald St, Lyneham, ACT (and by Zoom)

Craig was Guest Speaker at the Canberra Jung Society in March last year, on the subject “Stillness Turbulence and Pressure – a personal story from Central Australia”.

The ancient Grecian Mysteries of Eleusis revolved around communal ceremonies of Demeter’s loss and Persephone’s descent and return.

The themes and conduct of the Mysteries were an inspiration to Glenda, especially seen within the Chorus of Women production of The Gifts of the Furies –
her version of Aeschylus’s Eumenides.
and also in her explorations, through Maria Gimbutas, of ancient European women’s culture.

I will take up five themes close to Glenda’s heart –

* Intuition and a soul’s intent (Telos)
* Participation mystique and the voice of women
* Keeping secrets – or- the Mantle of Silence
* Gathering threads – or – The Knot of Isis
* Contemporary manifestations of the Mysteries.

My thoughts about the mystery of the Mysteries are influenced by actual visits to the sites of Eleusis and Delphi,
by the three community theatre productions, with Miriam Pickard, of the Persephone myth, given in Central Australia and Santorini
and by Glenda’s own reflections and work.

This Friday night lecture is linked to a special event by A Chorus of Women on Saturday 8 November, see below.

Dr Craig San Roque: As well as psychological practice in diverse settings, Craig’s published works include:
* the award winning graphic novel The Long Weekend in Alice Springs, Sydney/Purgatorio,
* The Second Goya (on the American oligarch) in Singer’s Cultural Complexes and the Soul of America and a keynote talk:
* An Older Voice – Things I heard in Warlpiri Country @ the 2023 Freud Conference, Indigenous Voice/s Psychoanalytic Listening.
