In late 1929, in Munich, Jung and the sinologist Richard Wilhelm published Wilhelm’s translation of an ancient Chinese text, The Secret of the Golden Flower, with his notes and discussion of the text, and a “European commentary” by Jung. A second, revised edition of the German original was published in 1938 (Zurich), with a special foreword by Jung and his Wilhelm memorial address. The following translation of Jung’s commentary and his foreword is based closely on Mrs. Baynes’ version, from which some of the editorial notes have also been taken over.

Carl Jung’s commentary on the Chinese Taoist text, “The Secret of the Golden Flower,” offers a profound bridge between Eastern wisdom and Western psychology. Jung, initially bewildered by the text’s foreignness, found invaluable guidance in Richard Wilhelm’s deep understanding of Chinese thought.

Western engagement with Eastern practices often falls into the trap of shallow imitation. True comprehension requires not merely adopting practices but transforming one’s understanding and being. The depth of Chinese philosophy arises from a cultural fulfillment that allows detachment from worldly ambitions.

In his psychological work, Jung discovered parallels between Eastern wisdom and Western psychic development, grounded in the concept of the collective unconscious—our shared psychological foundation. This universality in the human experience transcends cultural boundaries.

The evolution of consciousness involves balancing the conscious will with the unconscious. As consciousness expands, it risks detachment from its roots, leading to crises. The Chinese maintained a balanced consciousness, embracing life’s paradoxes. Jung’s commentary provides timeless insights into the human psyche, enriching our understanding and paving the way for a more integrated approach to the mysteries of the soul.

Thank you for devoting your time, and hope you will help spread the message, for a better and more conscious and whole humanity.
