Psychosocial Wednesdays with Ruth Williams, Soul and Spirit in Jungian Analysis. 16 October 2024
January 9, 2025 at 08:33PM
ABSTRACT
Jungian analyst Ruth Williams will discuss an aspect of her latest book on spirituality Exploring Spirituality from a Post-Jungian Perspective: Clinical and Personal Reflections. (London and New York: Routledge 2023). The evening will touch on the nature of the soul, psyche and chakras. In Jungian thought, ‘psyche’ and ‘soul’ are often used interchangeably, both relating to sexuality and the deeper self. Soul moves slowly over time, like a deep tone, while spirit can act quickly, like lightning. For Williams, ‘spirit’ is an experiential phenomenon. It is associated with chakras, energy centres that connect the body to the spiritual realm through the aura, with seven major chakras, each associated with different aspects of the body and mind. Williams discusses her research into whether and how Jungians work with soul and spirit in the consulting room.

ABOUT PSYCHOSOCIAL WEDNESDAYS
Every Wednesday evening, Sigmund Freud convened with colleagues in the waiting room of
his Viennese practice at Berggasse 19, uncovering and debating profound ideas within the
realm of psychoanalysis. C.G. Jung extended this idea by establishing a Psychological Club in
Zurich, a clubhouse that became a similar setting to share ideas and offer a space where the
inner, often isolating work of the soul could find harmony through exchange with others.
Since 2020, Psychosocial Wednesdays, a digital salon, has integrated the concepts developed
by these pioneers by offering a global platform for colleagues from diverse psychological
disciplines to share their ideas and creative works.
