The International Association for Analytical Psychology (IAAP) has announced that its next International Congress will take place in Rome from August 27 to September 1, 2028, under the theme: Psyche’s Search for Temenos in Times of Turmoil: Witnessing – Engaging – Transforming.
The theme was developed by the Program Committee following what was described as a particularly intense and fruitful meeting, in which every word of the title was carefully considered. The committee sought a formulation that would bring genuinely Jungian concepts, most notably the idea of temenos as a containing, protected space, into direct dialogue with the turbulent realities of our contemporary world. The three-part subtitle, Witnessing – Engaging – Transforming, points to a progression that will likely shape the congress’s clinical and cultural discussions.
The congress will be held at the Auditorium Parco della Musica Ennio Morricone, one of Rome’s most celebrated contemporary landmarks. Designed by Italian architect Renzo Piano, the complex comprises three concert halls and an outdoor theatre set within a park. Inaugurated in 2002, it has since become one of Europe’s most-visited cultural venues, and was later renamed in honour of the great composer Ennio Morricone following his passing in 2020. The building’s distinctive architecture, its three curved hall structures are often affectionately nicknamed “the beetles” or “the turtles”, features interiors clad in cherry wood to achieve some of the best acoustics in Italy. During its construction, excavations uncovered the foundations of a villa and an oil-press dating from the sixth century BC, prompting Renzo Piano to adjust his design to accommodate the archaeological remains and include a small museum to house the discovered artefacts. It is a venue that bridges antiquity and modernity in a way that feels entirely fitting for a congress devoted to depth psychology.
The IAAP Officers have already met with the Organising Congress Agency and the Organising Committee, and preparations are well underway. Further details, including registration information and calls for papers, will be announced in due course.
