Eranos Conference 2026: Eclipse of the Demos and Betrayals of Democracy

A gathering at one of depth psychology's most historic venues
This September from the 9th to the 12th, the conference takes up a theme that feels especially urgent: the crisis of democracy. The 2026 gathering asks what becomes of the demos — the people, in the political sense — in an age of fragmentation and identity-driven politics, where solidarity and shared responsibility are increasingly difficult to sustain. It is a question with clear resonance for those who think psychoanalytically about culture and collective life.

Speakers include Luigi Ferrajoli (University of Roma Tre), Geneviève Fraisse (EHESS, Paris), Céline Spector (Sorbonne), John Tresch (Warburg Institute, London), and Marcus Thelen (Biomedicine Research Institute, Bellinzona). Sarantis Thanopulos of the Italian Psychoanalytic Society joins as a guest teacher in the doctoral seminar, which is coordinated by Dimitri D’Andrea, Adriano Fabris, and Gabriele Guerra. Lectures will be held in English, Italian, French, German, or Spanish depending on the speaker; no simultaneous translation is provided.

The conference is held in partnership with the Braillard Architectes Foundation, and in collaboration with several European doctoral programs, including PhD programs in Transcultural Humanistic Studies (University of Bergamo), Philosophy (Universities of Pisa and Florence), Religious Sciences (Faculty of Theology of Lugano), Germanic and Slavic Studies (Sapienza University of Rome and Univerzita Karlova, Prague), and Social and Political Change (Universities of Florence and Turin). This breadth of collaboration reflects the characteristically interdisciplinary spirit that has always defined Eranos.

Since 2021, the annual conferences have been dedicated to the memory of Peter Anton Miescher (1923–2020) and his wife Annatina (1924–2016). A pioneer in the study of autoimmune diseases, Miescher held positions at New York University, the University of Geneva, the World Health Organization, and the Chinese Ministry of Health. He was also a collector, musician, and committed humanist — a figure very much in the Eranos mold. In the final years of his life he collaborated with the Foundation on two symposia at Tarasp Castle, and a generous donation from the family now funds an annual study meeting on the themes of art, spirituality, and the meaning of life. The dedication of the 2026 conference to his memory is a fitting way to honour both the man and the values he shared with Eranos. Since 1933, the Eranos Foundation has gathered scholars, thinkers, and practitioners on the shores of Lake Maggiore in Ascona, Switzerland for its annual conference. Founded by Olga Fröbe-Kapteyn, Eranos has a particular significance for the Jungian community, as Jung himself delivered many of his most important ideas here first, and past participants have included Erich Neumann, Karl Kerényi, Mircea Eliade, Henry Corbin, and Joseph Campbell.

Places are limited. The registration fee is CHF 50 for the full conference or CHF 25 for individual days.
