A Jungian Approach to Spontaneous Drawing: A Window to the Soul

Spontaneous drawing brings one to the prelogical level of the psyche, beyond the conscious mind, where the unconscious expresses itself freely in surprising revelations. This practice illuminates an oft-forgotten aspect of C.G. Jung’s personal practice and psychology; the power of spontaneity for accessing unconscious material. The analysis of drawings is an art and a science. As an art it requires experience and intuition, as a science it requires a knowledge of the structure and dynamics of the psyche as proposed by C.G. Jung.

In this series of two workshop sessions, analyst, author, and lecturer, Patricia Anne Elwood, will lead you into the art and science of spontaneous drawing as prescribed and practiced by C.G. Jung.  Incorporating both theoretical material with creative application, Patricia will guide participants through the exercise of spontaneous drawing and based on her 40 years of research and experience, offer a Jungian methodology for illuminating the symbolic message contained within the image.

Spontaneous drawing provides an approach to all ages over and beyond cultural differences, religion, sex or language.  It offers an empirical experience and is a most precious tool for all those in the helping professions as well as all who are interested in the psychology of C. G. Jung and in their own self development.

This course is ideal if

  • You are interested in accessing the deeper levels of the psyche
  • You work in the helping professions and want a creative approach to access unconscious material
  • You are a professional clinician, therapist, or student of psychology looking for an alternative to a strictly rational approach to the psyche.

Course Overview

Workshop One:  Will focus on acquiring insight into the structure and dynamics of the psyche as reflected in spontaneous drawings. This interactive session will lead participants into the art and science of spontaneous drawing

Workshop Two: Will focus on analysis of participant’s spontaneous drawing material with introduction to the personal and collective levels of the unconscious.

By the End of This Course You Will Be Able To

  • Recognize how simple images can reveal the inner dynamics of the psyche
  • Be able to perceive how the expression of the unconscious is illustrated in spontaneous images
  • Analyze a spontaneous drawing using a method anchored in C.G. Jung’s structure and dynamics of the psyche
