In the early 1900s when Jung was beginning his career, “empathy” was a newly minted word. Since Jung‘s day there has been a flood of information and research on the experience and functioning of empathy; certain individuals now identify themselves as “Empaths.” Today empathy is considered to lie at the heart of the healing arts; many natural Empaths seem to function intuitively as “naive healers” to the people around them. Is empathy an innate capacity, a psychological skill to develop or an art to be practiced? How does an empathic person evolve from a “naïve” towards a “mature” manifestation of the archetype of the Wounded Healer and what is the place of empathy in the Jungian process of “individuation”?
