The Evolving Psyche: Cultural Complexes and Diverse Pathways to Wholeness

Junguiana Journal, Volume 43 (2025), free access

This volume of Junguiana, published on May 30, 2025, presents four compelling articles that engage with contemporary social and psychological issues through a Jungian lens, demonstrating the continued relevance of analytical psychology for understanding modern cultural complexes and identity formation.

The issue opens with Pitágoras Baskara Justino’s “Whiteness and Countertransference: Implications of a Cultural Complex in the Psychoanalytic Environment“. This article examines how racial dynamics and the cultural complex of whiteness manifest within the therapeutic relationship, particularly exploring the countertransferential responses that arise when these dynamics are activated in psychoanalytic work. Justino’s analysis provides crucial insights into how cultural complexes around race and privilege can unconsciously influence the analytic process, offering important considerations for contemporary therapeutic practice in multicultural contexts.

Luna Pereira Gimenez contributes “Jungian Feminisms and the Postmodern Trickster Woman“. This article examines how the trickster archetype manifests in contemporary feminine identity, particularly in postmodern contexts where traditional gender roles are being challenged and transformed. Gimenez’s work illuminates how women today may embody trickster qualities as a means of navigating and subverting patriarchal structures, offering a fresh perspective on feminine individuation in the current cultural moment.

Fernanda Gonçalves Moreira’s “Resilience and Diversity in Individuation” provides a comprehensive examination of how diverse identities and experiences contribute to psychological resilience and the individuation process. This article explores how marginalized communities and individuals with diverse backgrounds may develop unique pathways to psychological wholeness, challenging traditional notions of individuation that may not account for the specific challenges and strengths that emerge from navigating multiple identity dimensions and social pressures.

The volume concludes with Pitágoras Baskara Justino’s second contribution, “Sex (Between Gay Men): On Jouissance, Fetishes, the Numinous and Individuation“. This bold and theoretically sophisticated article explores the intersection of sexuality, spirituality, and psychological development within gay male experience. Justino examines how sexual expression, particularly through fetishistic practices, can serve as a pathway to numinous experience and contribute to the individuation process. The article challenges conventional boundaries between sexuality and spirituality, offering a nuanced understanding of how erotic experience can facilitate psychological and spiritual development.
